i've been in so many groups of women that have been addressed as "guys" that it no longer worry i'm being misgendered. progress, i guess?

unfortunately, Trump's nominee is likely to succeed.

i'm skeptical that so-called moderate republicans will vote against any nominee—moderate *democrats* voted for Gorsuch.

one of the two nominally pro-choice GOP senators, Susan Collins, already sounds like she'll vote for any nominee who pays lip service to respecting precedent.

i could maybe see her and Murkowski causing Trump to pick someone closer to Roberts than Gorsuch

i don't think Roe v. Wade, Obergefall etc. will be officially overturned unless Trump nominates a replacement for Ginsburg or Breyer. my sense is that Roberts is okay with limiting but not overturning these cases. that won't make an actual difference in people's lives, but will make Roberts sleep at night.

that being said, Roberts is approx. as conservative as O'Connor, and she reaffirmed Roe in spirit and name, so he might surprise us.

my biggest short-term concerns with Kennedy's replacement:
—rejection of lower court decisions saying anti-trans discrimination counts as discrimination by sex.
—any and all restrictions on abortion being greenlit
—even more overt muslim bans. the combination of the last ban being approved plus the court getting even more conservative will definitely embolden Trump
—more erosion of workers' rights.
