new computer maybe

I was thinking about building a new workstation, or upgrading my current one but the GPU shortage makes it pretty much impossible to do without getting a pre-built or something like it.

Question: Are there any decent prebuilt companies that don't use proprietary hardware and historically have decent linux support?

@ada I was about to answer Zareason, but then I just remembered they went out of business last year. :(

As far as proprietary hardware goes, almost everything has some sort of proprietary hardware in it. Do you mean proprietary hardware with poor FOSS support?

@cstanhope yeah pretty much. there's no way I can build something these days with comparable specs.

my biggest problem outside of linux compatibility with the big OEMs (dell,hp,lenovo,etc) is that I need an AMD GPU for work (and linux support), and everyone is pushing RTX cards.

I'd also like to put support behind someone who explicitly sets out with linux support in mind.

@ada I've never bought from them, but there's System76:

@ada I just realized I don't know if you're based in the US or not. Anyway, System76 is the only one that pops into my head that isn't a refurb shop.

@ada I use a Tuxedo Computers Laptop, it is pretty good. I think they also sell pre-built desktops.
